Community Specific Housing

In addition to typical student housing described here, there are a number of buildings which are unique in some way. Some are for students with particular interests or affiliations with certain schools and/or academic programs. Others are unique in terms of location and amenities. Additional eligibility requirements for each building are outlined below. 

The Arbor

The Arbor

Student housing is available at The Arbor, our newest facility located in Riverdale, The Bronx. This building was completed in the summer of 2008. The majority of units available at The Arbor are "Apartment Share" style, with some couples and family housing also available. These luxury apartments are more spacious than typical UAH units, with greater amenities, such as dishwashers and laundry machines in each apartment. Shuttle service is available, and utilities are included for apartment shares. Parking  is available for an additional fee.

International House (I-House) - 500 Riverside Drive

UAH has made a special arrangement to lease a limited number of single rooms from International House (I-House). You must be 21 years of age or older to be eligible to live at I-House. Housing for couples is not available. To apply for one of these single dormitory-style rooms, students must fully and accurately complete both the UAH application and the I-House application. The I-House application must be downloaded from our website, completed, and sent directly to the UAH Office.

Approval for I-House 

In order to be housed at I-House, an applicant must be approved by International House and also be allocated housing by his or her school. Assignments are made based on availability. Students approved for housing at I-House are not eligible to apply to transfer during the contract period. UAH assigned residents will be given an opportunity to transfer to a UAH unit at the once their contract ends in May.

  3. Send the I-House application to UAH, along with your personal statement and passport size photo.

600 West 113th Street

The majority of students housed in 600 West 113th Street are undergraduates in Columbia College, the School of Engineering and General Studies. All UAH assigned rooms are furnished and utilities (except cable television), campus telephone and Ethernet service are included. Students share kitchens, bathrooms and all common areas. Porter service provides basic cleaning services for kitchens, bathrooms and common areas. Rental fees are charged by semester to your Student Financial Services (SFS) account.

Amenities - This full service building has a 24-hour security desk, laundry room and 2 elevators. The building is located on the corner of Broadway and West 113th Street.

Beit Ephraim (Kosher Housing) - 535 West 112th Street

The Bayit, Columbia's Pluralistic Jewish Food Co-op, is a 28-member community with a Kosher kitchen. It is open to undergraduate, General Studies, and graduate students. The cost is approximately $1,060 per month, however these fees are billed by term to the Student Financial Services account.

ALP and SEAS Combined Plan Program

Guide to Living at Carlton Arms

All ALP and Engineering Combined Plan Program students are housed in dormitory-style accommodations at the Carlton Arms. These rooms are located off a corridor and are either private (one student per room "single suite room #1") or semi-private (two students per room "shared suite room # 2"). Rental fees for these units are charged by the session/semester to your Student Financial Services (SFS) Carlton Armsaccount. Dormitory-style accommodations are used to house single students only, and most floors and suites are co-ed. Family members and friends are strictly prohibited from sharing the accommodations with student residents. Pets are strictly prohibited in these accommodations. Violation of these policies will result in termination of the student housing contract and the student will no longer be eligible for University housing.

Amenities - Students share the kitchen, bathroom, and any common areas. All rooms are furnished and include utilities (other than cable television) and Ethernet service.

362 Riverside Drive has a 24 hour manned security desk located at the main entrance.

Law School Housing

A number of buildings are available only to Columbia Law School Students. The rooms and apartments are assigned directly by the Law School For information on the "400" block of West 115th Street, 420 West 116th Street, Lenfest, and Lionsgate, see the following sections:

"400" block of West 115th St., 420 West 116th St. (Law School only)

Law School housing on the "400" block of West 115th Street is in five elevator apartments located between Amsterdam Avenue and Morningside Drive. These units are apartment shares, in which three students share the common areas (living room, kitchen, and bathroom) of an apartment, with each having an adjacent private bedroom. These apartments are furnished. Ethernet service and utilities (except cable television) are included in the rent. Rent is billed monthly.

420 West 116th Street is a nine-story, early 20th century building directly across the street from Greene Hall, the main Law School classroom building. This block is home to several Law School faculty families, senior administrators, and the President of Columbia University. 420 West 116th Street has furnished and unfurnished studio/efficiency and one bedroom apartments. Ethernet service is included in the rent. Rent is billed monthly, and utilities are not included in the rent.  

Tenants in these units are not eligible to transfer into other UAH buildings.

Lenfest Hall, West 121st Street (Law School only)

Lenfest Hall is located on West 121st Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Morningside Drive. This luxury high-rise building contains 181 studio/efficiency units and 28 one bedroom units. Lenfest's amenities include 24-hour security, public study rooms with wireless Internet connections, a bamboo garden and a card operated laundry room. Utilieis are includeed. All units are furnished with space-saving furniture that is able to accommodate a variety of arrangements and functions. Rent is billed by semester to your Student Financial Services (SFS) account.

Residents of Lenfest Hall must contact Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT) at (212) 854-1919 for more information on obtaining cable TV service.  

Tenants of Lenfest are not eligible to transfer into other UAH buildings. For more information on Lenfest, please visit the Lenfest Web page on the Columbia Law School website.

Lionsgate, 520 West 112th Street (Law School only)

The University owns a number of furnished and unfurnished apartments in this high rise building on West 112th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway. Lionsgate has 24-hour security. There are studio/efficiency, one bedroom, and two bedroom units available. Some of these units may be available to students with children, depending upon unit availability. Rent is billed monthly, and rates are significantly higher than in other UAH units. Tenants in Lionsgate are not eligible to transfer into other UAH buildings.

Teachers College "New Residence"  - 517 West 121st St (GSAS, GS Only)

UAH has made special arrangements with Teachers College to lease a limited number of efficiency units at their New Residence Hall. These are only available to GSAS and GS students, upon approval by their schools. Only students 21 years and older can live in this housing.

These units each have a private bathroom. The smaller units, averaging 200 sq. ft. in size, share common kitchens distributed throughout the building and are equipped with a micro-fridge. The larger units, averaging 250 sq. ft. in size, have a private kitchenette.  All units are furnished with a bed (extra-long twin in the small unit, full in the larger units), desk, desk chair, table and chair, floor lamp, chest of drawers and closet/wardrobe. 

Students assigned to this housing are not eligible to transfer into regular UAH units.  Although we categorize these rooms as "efficiency units," this housing is not available to couples or families. 

Subletting is prohibited in this housing.

Manhattan Valley Leased Properties (School of General Studies) - 18,  61/63 West 108th St & 950 Columbus Ave

A number of furnished apartment shares and a smaller number of efficiency units are available to eligible General Studies students, upon approval by the School of General Studies.  These units are located in the Manhattan Valley neighborhood, and the buildings are leased to the University by a third party landlord. Tenants in these units are not eligible to transfer into other UAH buildings.
