Operations

Operations performs the regular services and repair work needed to maintain a clean, attractive, safe, and environmentally sound environment for the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of Columbia University. The department is responsible for the maintenance of 13 million square feet of built space in 246 buildings on and in the vicinity of the Morningside Heights campus, its outdoor areas, and Baker Field facilities.

Teams:

Campus Operations is responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of academic and administrative buildings on the Morningside Heights campus. Our Operations group focuses on the upkeep of grounds, fire safety, elevator maintenance, and special event support. If you would like to request one of our services, please visit our services page.

Residential Operations is responsible for the routine operations and maintenance of University owned or managed residential apartment buildings (This does not include University Residence Halls).     

University Apartment Housing (UAH) is a division of Residential Operations and manages residential units in the immediate vicinity of the Morningside Heights campus. This housing is primarily used to house eligible students, fellows, faculty, and certain eligible officers of research, libraries and administration.

The Off-Campus Housing Assistance (OCHA) office helps Columbia affiliates in their search for rental housing in non-Columbia owned buildings located in the metropolitan area. OCHA maintains a Web site and regular office hours to provide advice, resources, and an online database of available housing.

Services Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Facilities Services Center receives all requests for maintenance and other facility-related assistance in the academic and administrative buildings on the Morningside campus and routes them to the appropriate trade shops for action.

The Services Center coordinates Facilities communications, dispatches mechanics to emergency conditions, and monitors campus fire alarms. Evenings and weekends, the center also handles calls from University apartments and undergraduate housing. Aside from their initial requests, clients may call the center to escalate urgent matters, follow up on the status of existing work orders, and resolve questions about billing. The Plant Engineering and Utilities oversees the University's physical plant, including building heating and cooling, utility systems, and is responsible for comprehensive energy management.
