College Walk Bollard Replacement: Summer 2019

This summer, Facilities and Operations is installing retractable bollards (short vertical posts that are raised and lowered to restrict vehicle access to buildings and grounds) on the east and west sides of College Walk to replace existing bollards at the same locations that are not functioning. They will join the hydraulic bollards in place at College Walk's north and south pedestrian gates. This project will begin May 28 with the first set of bollards on the east (Amsterdam Avenue) side, and when those are complete will switch to the west (Broadway) side.

What is Happening

  • Excavation and removal of the existing nonfunctioning bollards and the immediately surrounding pavers and walkway surfaces
  • Installation of new electrical conduits and machinery to raise and lower the bollards
  • Installation of the new bollards
  • Reinstallation of paving and walking surfaces

What to Expect

The following potential impacts are expected during the project:

  • Temporary closure of the central gate and a portion of central College Walk nearest the gate where work is being performed (only one side of College Walk will be worked on at a time)
  • Rerouting of pedestrian traffic around construction areas
  • Either the north or south College Walk pedestrian paths will be open for east-west travel at all times
  • Restrictions to vehicle access on College Walk
  • Some noise, concentrated during excavation activities

Schedule

Work is planned to begin May 28 and will continue in phases. Construction hours are planned for 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with weekend work as needed. The work is anticipated to be completed by the end of the summer. The anticipated completion schedule and daily activities are subject to change based on weather and other field conditions.
