Clean & Go Green, Summer '13: Continued Success
On July 10-12, 2013, the Morningside campus became a hub of recycling and reuse, as faculty and staff readied themselves for the start of the 2013-2014 academic year by participating in Columbia University's annual "Clean + Go Green" event. University and community members were encouraged to donate used furniture, electronics, computers, and books at collection points located in front of Lerner Hall, at the Grove, and in the Schermerhorn/Fairchild courtyard. As with previous "Clean + Go Greens," Facilities oversaw the drop-off locations and a Code Shred truck was present on College Walk to facilitate the shredding of paper items.
Approximately 6,000 lbs of cardboard, 24,000 lbs of bulk waste, 6,000 lbs of metal, and 6 1cubic yard containers of toner cartridges were collected. In addition, 48 boxes of printers, monitors, laptops, and additional computer parts were shipped by to recycling facilities. This year's event proved to be a win-win for book lovers, who donated and collected an equal number of used books, leaving no surplus items remaining.
Each year, Columbia University Facilities holds "Clean + Go Green" in an effort to keep goods out of landfills and into the hands of recycling agencies. Dumpsters are available across campus, at no cost, for the disposal of large unwanted items. Waste materials are sent to recycling facilities. Through these efforts, when community members clean their spaces, they are also able to "go green" by purging unwanted items in an environmentally friendly way.
